Solar energy – Off-grid solar power/electric/photovoltaics tour/details with backup generator
This a tour with details of an off-grid solar power installation I worked on a few years ago. I go over a system diagram, show the system itself, and then talk about the safety features including breakers/fuses, lightning arrestors, and bonding equipment to ground.
This system includes 2100watts of solar panels, a 10kW diesel generator, two Outback FM-80 charge controllers, two Outback inverters, an Outback Mate, a Xantrex TMA-500 battery status monitor, and 6 4volt, 1104amphour Surrette/Rolls lead acid deep cycle batteries.
Thanks to Ottawa Solar Power (http://ottawasolarpower.com) for allowing me to use this installation in this off-grid solar power video.

DIY – Home Solar Power Part #3
I’ve updated my system with 2 more batteries that will give me 440 amp hours, added some wood planks for more support on my shelf, a 60 amp breaker, and some small emergency lighting. Overall I believe this system will support my needs for a true emergency backup system providing hours of emergency power.

Solar powered portable battery box – generator PROTOTYPE
I have constructed this portable solar generator to learn. I believe that no matter how much you read and discuss until you have a go you never truly understand. Since making this video I have made some adjustments and improvements – I might post a video to show these soon.
The ‘box’ is currently connected to two panels that combined give 20w 18v at best – I am aware that even with good sun it would take above 20 hours to fully charge the 18 amp hour battery from absolute flat (I do not intend to ruin the battery by running it absolutely flat!).
When I am happy that I know what I am doing I will construct a 60w panel and buy a grid tie inverter. If successful I will add more panels. Thanks for any constructive comments

DIY – Home Solar Power Part #4 “Safety First Update”
Just an update to show that even though it’s good to have a solar backup system, it can also be dangerous if adequate safeguards are not in place. I’m on my 3rd inverter after my 2000 Watt (Continuous) Pure Sine wave inverter “burned” out on me when I plugged in a 1600 Watt household iron (it was the Shark brand iron). I thought it was 1500 Watts when making the video. Anyway, you would think that a 2000 Watt inverter could handle it,,, well no it didn’t. It didn’t even trip the overload protection in the inverter. Just literally burned out.
