Solar panel for car battery?

has anyone used before a car battery solar panel charger? i’m intrested in how efficient they actually are. The idea is the following: i would use a car battery to constantly power a mobile phone over a long camping period and use a solar panel to rechard the car battery. Will the panel provide enough charge so the battery doens’t go flat?
Well the whole point is this: i’m going on a trip and will need the mobile to keep charging as i will use the satnav on it for about 10 hours a day (while using the satnav it needs to charge or battery will go flat in 1 hour). I’m thinking about using a car battery to charge the phone via a car charger that connects to the sigarette lighter and maybe use one or 2 solar panels to keep the battery charging or maybe a bottle generator (dynamo) which ever will be more efficient. I’ll be traveling by bycile with a trailer for equipment and that’s why i can bring a car battery with me but as long as it will be enought for at least 30 days of travel.

My advice would be to forget charging a car battery with a solar panel, the amount of charge you will get from the panel will be to low to really keep the battery topped up not to mention the fact that a car battery is very heavy.
There are a couple of things you could use, first charge the mobile direct from the solar panel and second invest in a hand operated generator.

Battery powered by Outlet AND Solar Panels?

I want to know what would happen if you had a computer (say 100W) connected to a deep cycle battery that was connected to an AC outlet and Solar panels.
-If connected just to the outlet, if the battery was charged, it would draw 100 W from the wall.
-If connected to a solar panel, it would draw 100W from the battery, and if only getting 50W from the solar panel, the battery would slowly drain until it was empty trying to supply the 50 extra W to power the computer

Could the battery be connected to both simultaneously so that whatever the solar panel cannot supply, the outlet does rather than the battery? Say it wasn’t as sunny and the panel only gave 30 W, the wall would then give the extra 70W. This way the battery is always 100% charged for when the power goes out and the appliances on the battery could run indefinitely without worrying about the batter running out.
Please let me know if a hookup such as this is possible, even if a mediating unit must be involved.
Thanks for the help! Searching for this kind of answer is very difficult.

You definitely need a mediating unit. They are called inverters, specifically an inverter for solar panels.

A good solar inverter will do all that you describe, exactly how you think it should.

If you are wanting one for only 100W, unfortunately these are not manufactured. Good inverters that do all you describe are manufactured with a minimum power of about 1000W (and higher). These will handle 100W, but you will still have to pay a higher price for a larger inverter.

This is just one example of a solar inverter:

Plain inverters rated for as little as 50W are very cheap, but they only invert 12V to 120VAC and will not automatically charge batteries or automatically switch power sources.

This is one example of a low power plain inverter:

.

can you charge batteries with solar at the same time using the batteries?

like the solar powered calculator, it switches automatically from battery and solar. this is a yes or no question. If you know how to that would be even better.

Yes, that is how battery based solar systems work. The charge controller manages putting the energy from the solar panels in the battery, while the inverter converts it to AC and allows appliances to run off it.
